Gingerbread House

On Sunday, I helped the kids decorate a gingerbread house.

Gracie decorated one side of the roof.

Then Bradley decorated the other side.

Then they both stuck the candies all over it.

Gracie posing with her side.  Each kid decorated one side of the house, so the house doesn't look the same all the way around.

 Bradley pleased with his masterpiece.

Since the big kids were getting their pictures taken, Danielle wanted her picture taken too.

I didn't get any good pics of the finished product.  But it looked pretty cute, I thought.  And more importantly, the kids had fun.

Mommy's helper

Danielle loves to help with the laundry.  The other day, as I was getting ready to start a load of Gracie's clothes, Danielle took over and loaded the whole thing for me.

We can only help she is still helpful with laundry in 10 years...

GO TEXANS!

We are big Texans fans at our house and we couldn't be happier that the Texans clinched a playoff berth today.  And it couldn't have happened in more exciting fashion.  Unfortunately for me I had a rehearsal at 3 so I missed the fantastic end of the game.  I was listening in my car and when I had to go in to the rehearsal the Texans were driving and had just completed a pass to take them to the Bengals' 35 yard line with about a minute and a half to play and no timeouts.  It killed me to get out of the car.  I told Doug when I left to text me when it was a final and I announced to everyone at the handbell rehearsal that the Texans had won when I got the text from Doug.  So exciting.

I would love nothing more than for my two favorite teams to play in the Superbowl.  The Texans and Packers have the two longest active winning streaks, so it could happen.  ;)

Doug's New Baby

Doug has wanted a Chevy Avalanche for almost as long as that truck has been made.  As soon as they dropped the ugly plastic from the exterior, he has longed for one.  His dream is finally a reality.  He bought his dream truck last month.  He loves it.  I love it.  The kids love it.

Isn't it gorgeous?

Self-realization

My friends and I have a term: "Car Seat Nazi".  We use this to describe people who are extremely particular about car seat safety in vehicles.  I was recently asked by one of these friends if I was a Car Seat Nazi.  I said no.

Fast forward to this past weekend.  Gracie and Bradley were going to spend the night with Doug's parents, and they were all going out to dinner Sat night.  This meant Bradley and Gracie would be riding in the car with their grandparents.  I am fine with them riding with their grandparents and they've done it before many times, but as I was discussing the plans with Doug I mentioned that we should install B's seat or check their installation if they already had installed it.  That's when it hit me: I am a Car Seat Nazi.

But you know what?  I'm ok with that.  I may still have my six year old in a 5 pt harness when many parents of six year olds have their children in booster seats, but I'm ok with that because he is safer.  And my nine year old isn't required by law to sit in a booster anymore, but she's small for her age and will continue sitting in one for a while.  She may complain sometimes that her friends don't have booster seats and that they can sit in the front seat, but she is safer so I'll listen to those complaints while she continues to sit in her booster seat.  And my baby girl will turn two in February and she still sits rear-facing in her carseat.  The new recommendations are to keep kids rear-facing until they are two, but I know that rear facing is the safest way and will probably keep Danielle turned around for far longer than her second birthday.

These things make me different from many other parents, but I'm ok with that.  I do it because I want to protect my kids as much as possible.  There are so many things that are out of my control, this is something I can control.

So call me a Car Seat Nazi if you want.  I'm ok with it.

Third time around

It's definitely easier to parent the third time around.  You know what to expect the third time, you've pretty much seen it all before.  It is more challenging in that there are three little people who need you, but I definitely feel like I've got a handle on things.

Like for instance, Danielle has started throwing some tantrums.  Not a lot... yet.  But they are happening.  As the seasoned parent I am, I know to ignore them and I easily can.  Not like with the first child, when it was harder to igore her.  Unfortunately for me, having the large age gap that we did may prove to offer it's own challenges.  Danielle threw a fit the other day and both big kids were trying to calm her down.  I kept telling them to ignore her and leave her alone, but it was not something they wanted to do.  I told Doug we'll have to sit them down and explain the importance of ignoring her when she's acting like that or the big kids will undo all that we're doing right.

Another example is Danielle talking.  She is talking a lot more, but obviously doesn't say everything right initially.  An example is that a week or so ago, she started saying "princess" but she said it "pee ah".  Gracie latched right onto the Pee Ah pronunciation and was saying it that way too and I had to remind her that she should say it right so Danielle learns to say it right.  Now just a week later, Danielle says something that sounds very much like "princess" and not at all like "pee ah".  Danielle calls Doug's parents "Ma" and "Pa", but we all keep referring to them as Grandma and Grandpa, and we know she'll be saying it right soon enough.

Things are constantly busy and I never feel like I have enough time, but things are also really good.  I think we're all happy that our last baby is growing up and we're looking forward to putting the baby stage behind us.

Meet "You"

Apparently I have referred to Danielle as "you" too many times.  Now when she sees a picture of herself, she says "YOU!".

It's pretty cute.

Also, today she started saying "Woopsie" when she falls down.  She thought it was so funny, she intentionally fell down about a dozen times at Target today just so she could say it over and over again.

Oh, and for those of you not on facebook, she also answered that she wanted Cookies when we asked what she wanted for Christmas.  Specifically Oreos, which she can also now say.

I love this age.
